In depth

Each of these already threw at construction with a message naming the allowed values, which is the right refusal at the wrong moment: it survives tsc and lands as a blank page. A union moves the same failure to the call site and costs nothing, because these are decisions rather than quantities and a caller computing one is choosing between named tiers either way.

Exported so a consumer building a quality profile can name the type of the field it is filling.
