The costing in sphericalHarmonics below is what picked degree 1 and it is worth reading before anybody raises this. Nine coefficients fit a texel as bytes with a per-splat scale beside them, which is +50% on the record and on the read; degree 2 is three more texels and degree 3 is six, and degree 3 alone would put 307 MB a frame through a device already carrying 389.
